The NWTF is a half million member grassroots, nonprofit organization with members in 50 states, Canada and 11 other foreign countries. It supports scientific wildlife management on public, private and corporate lands as well as wild turkey hunting as a traditional North American sport.

In 1973, the National Wild Turkey Federation was founded in Fredericksburg, Va., At that time, there were an estimated 1.3 million wild turkeys and 1.5 million turkey hunters. Shortly after its founding, the NWTF moved to Edgefield, S.C., where it is headquartered today.

Thanks to the work of federal, state and provincial wildlife agencies and the NWTF's many volunteers and partners, there are now over six million wild turkeys and approximately 2.6 million turkey hunters. Turkey hunting has become the second highest participated type of hunting and is the fastest growing form of hunting.

Since 1985, more than $175 million NWTF and cooperator dollars have been spent on over 24,000 projects benefiting wild turkeys and other game and nongame species throughout North America. Hunters have also benefited as the NWTF has worked tirelessly to support our hunting heritage and protect and promote laws that increase hunting opportunity and safety.

Women in the Outdoors is dedicated to providing interactive educational outdoor opportunities for women ages 14 and older. Local chapters throughout the nation conduct outdoor learning events featuring hands-on activities.

The goal of the National Wild Turkey Federation's Women in the Outdoors program is to teach the importance of responsible wildlife management, increase participation in outdoor-related opportunities and to preserve the hunting tradition.

The Women in the Outdoors program will meet its goal by introducing more women to outdoor activities, training women as outdoor educators, and providing a network for men and women with similar outdoor interests within our local chapter system.

Each participant becomes a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation; therefore, increasing the role of females in the efforts of conserving the American wild turkey and the turkey hunting tradition.

One of the most exciting programs at the National Wild Turkey Federation focuses on young people. JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics, and Sportsmanship) is dedicated to informing, educating and involving North America's youth in wildlife conservation and the wise stewardship of our natural resources. With the growing number of turkey hunters, the JAKES program is also designed to help pass on the traditions of hunting with a strong eye toward ethics and safety. Increasing numbers of young people are learning to hunt without the benefits of an older mentor. To help address this situation, the NWTF has strengthened its commitment to the JAKES program.

Viewing our natural world through the eyes of a child will bring fresh, new appreciation for why we are so dedicated to conserving our natural resources. The spirit of conservation and the tradition of hunting have been passed from one generation to another in this country for centuries. The NWTF JAKES program will help keep this legacy alive as we continue to educate our youth.

With the same dedication it has brought to restoring wild turkey populations across North America, the NWTF is delivering, and in some cases re-introducing, the beauty and excitement of the outdoors to thousands of disabled people through its outreach program Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF.

The program was created by a merger between the Alabama-based Wheelin' Sportsmen of America and the NWTF. Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF is the realization of both organizations' commitment to creating a national effort to provide the disabled with opportunities to get out and enjoy outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing bird watching and much more.

Today, disabled women, kids and men of all ages are once again enjoying the outdoors. For more information about Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF, call (800) THE-NWTF.
